AfriLabs Calls for Research on Funding African Innovation Hubs

AfriLabs Research Group has announced a call for hub leaders, researchers, ecosystem experts, and funders to contribute to a collaborative study on sustainable funding for innovation hubs in Africa. The initiative is part of preparations for the AfriLabs Annual General Meeting (AGM) 2025, where selected findings will be presented in October.

According to the group, the research will focus on:
i. Key sources of hub funding across Africa
ii. Regional, sectoral, and model-specific funding gaps
iii. Successful sustainable financing models (PPPs, blended finance, revenue strategies)
iv. Roles of government, donors, and investors
v. Policy and investment recommendations

Eligibility requirements include:
a. Researchers and analysts
b. Hub managers and ecosystem builders
c. Development partners and funders

“This is an opportunity to shape how innovation hubs in Africa secure long-term and reliable financing,” AfriLabs said in its announcement. Members of the AfriLabs Research Group are encouraged to participate.

The deadline for Expressions of Interest is 11 August 2025, while applications must be submitted by 8 August 2025 to peter@afrilabs.com, with copies to zeineb@afrilabs.com and itoro@tqstem.org.

Applicants should include:
i. Your name, affiliation, and expertise
ii. Focus area (funding gaps, sustainable models, or both)
iii. Format: case study, data, interview, or literature input

AfriLabs has published additional details on the submission format at bit.ly/arg_cfreoi. Selected contributors will receive credit and have their work featured during the AfriLabs Annual Gathering in October.

The study aims to guide policy decisions, attract investors, and promote sustainable financing strategies that can strengthen Africa’s innovation ecosystem.
